Discount formulas
| Question | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Discount amount | initial price x discount rate / 100 | $100 x 20% = $20 |
| Final price | initial price - discount amount | $100 - $20 = $80 |
| Discount rate | discount amount / initial price x 100 | $20 / $100 x 100 = 20% |
| Final with tax | sale price x (1 + tax rate / 100) | $80 x 1.08 = $86.40 |
| Stacked discount | apply each percent to the running price | $100 after 20% and 10% = $72 |
Discount calculation example
For an initial price of $100 and a 20% discount, savings are $100 x 20 / 100 = $20. The sale price is $100 - $20 = $80. With 8% sales tax, the final total is $80 x 1.08 = $86.40.
FAQ
Is 20% off then 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. Stacked discounts are applied one after another. 20% off then 10% off equals a 28% total discount.
Should sales tax be applied before or after discount?
In most shopping contexts, sales tax is applied to the discounted sale price. Rules can vary by location and product category.
How do I find the original discount percent?
Subtract sale price from original price, divide by original price, then multiply by 100.
